Since 9/11, the FBI has been putting a lot of energy into adding lots of ancient data to the very large computerized database they are compiling for the 'battle against terrorism'. Anyone who is still alive will definitely have all the information compiled on them over the years added eventually. When they run your passport through the scanner or type your drivers license number into a mobile police data system, they will instantly see your entire life history no matter how suspect any of your actions have been. If you are brave enough, just ask the customs and immigration officer next time you pass through the border how much information there is on you - or you could file a 'freedom of information request' on yourself... ;-) Charlie (who probably has a very long file as well....) ------------------------------ Message-Id: <3.0.6.32.20040829132205.01841660 [at] pop.west.cox.net> Date: Sun, 29 Aug 2004 13:22:05 From: CB Subject: Re: a job posting >The problem is, there are always (at least) two sides to a story >and we have only heard one. My take on Jeff's post was that they weren't 'bad' people, just didn't quite get what was going on. It didn't strike me as bad-mouthing so much as a friendly warning. If I were looking for a gig in Alaska, I might still look at the job, but I'd have Jeff's words in the back of my mind. As with all things, consider the source. While I don't know know Jeff from Adam, the way he presented his problems seemed fairly calm and rational. As for the rest of your questions, see the above paragraph. I do think that those of us that have issues with an employee pass that info on to other prespective employers. When we do a 'glowing' revue of the individuals work, or when we act as a reference, we usually don't say that the person stunk, we usually say something like they "work better when in an isolated situation" or something similar. I do see the diference between this and a public forum, but if there is a danger there, I'd like to hear about it ahead of time. Of course, I'll still go there, but with a sense of caution. If Jeff had just said that they sucked and they smelled bad, and that they had other personal odious habits, I'd be suspicious of his motives. I think he presented fairly well, and I appreciate this kind of heads up. What would you do if asked to post a job that you thought had some drawbacks? Post the job and list the potential drawbacks, or just not post? (Not necessarily 'you', Klyph, but the collective you...) Don't count on it. Back in the Day, the Michigan State Police had a "red squad" doing surveillance on the counterculture. Sometime in the late 1970s, IIRC, the squad was disbanded and, as a result of a lawsuit, the state offered Michigan residents a chance to order a copy of any files the state police had been keeping on them. As a former college "radical", I ordered mine posthaste ... and when it arrived, found that it consisted of single short paragraph describing a protest march and including my name among a list of people labeled "not considered a threat." I was crushed. -- Pat Kight kightp [at] peak.org ------------------------------ Message-Id: <3.0.6.32.20040829133115.01841660 [at] pop.west.cox.net> Date: Sun, 29 Aug 2004 13:31:15 From: CB Subject: Re: Re: Protests in NYC >There goes your security clearance... guess Delbert will have to hang the >White House wreath now.
